Full movie description "Magic Fire":The life and career of German composer Richard Wagner.
Reviews of the Magic FireThis must have been a labour of love for Dieterle (who also produced the film) and was probably intended as a prestigious picture judging by the lavish colour photography, but I can't imagine anyone being terribly happy with the end result.
Magic Fire is choppy and episodic, which can be explained by the fact that the 95 minute release print was edited down from a two hour original, but whoever cut the movie did me a favour, because I don't know how much more of it I would have been able to take.
The script is filled with bland, declamatory dialogue and seems almost intently undramatic: as soon as Wagner gets into some kind of predicament, we barely have time to blink before someone comes along to solve it for him. So we follow Wagner from year to year, much like we watch the seasons change: the colours look good, but there isn't much going on and there are certainly no surprises. In fact, the whole movie plays like an over-budgeted educational subject of the kind shown in schools, as in "and in this scene we will see a reenactment of this famous event in Wagner's life, following which we will skip ahead to another one".
Further alienating the viewer is the way Wagner is characterized as immensely unlikeable, showing virtually no positive sides apart from his composing talent, and being rendered even worse by shallow, hammy acting from Badel, who never frowns when he can mug and never stands when he can pose. The rest of the cast, especially Thompson as a surreally hammy Franz Liszt, either follows Badel's example or gets drowned out by the scenery-chewers. Poor Peter Cushing, for instance, looks quite awkward in his part as a generous Wagner admirer whose wife his idol is bonking behind his back. I can only assume he took this little nothing role because he liked Wagner's music.
This brings us to the Wagner fans, who must have been the main demographic for this picture, and who must have been quite disappointed. I like the guy's music well enough (his "Flight of the Valkyries" has been used and overused in movies since time immemorial) but won't pretend to know much about him. Those who do say which isn't too much of a shock that Magic Fire plays fast and loose with Wagner's life and that the music isn't all that well represented either. There are a number of tableaux from his most famous operas, and they look nice I suppose, but even the insufferable Phantom of the Opera (1943) did that sort of thing better.
There is a potentially good scene near the end, where Wagner and Liszt reluctantly reconcile, but it's all but ruined by Badel's and Thompson's monstrous overacting. The rest of Magic Fire is pretty and dead like a plastic Christmas tree decoration. Dieterle, who made some splendid films in the 1930's and 40's, must have been severely over the hill by the time he got to make this movie.
